While America reduces its own missile defense budget, it may move ahead with installing a new batch of Patriot missiles in Poland. Russia has pledged to deploy its own missiles on the Russia-Poland border in response. In addition, Russia has stated that it will continue to strengthen military ties with Cuba and Venezuela if the US further deploys a missile defense system in Eastern Europe. Rand is a proponent of a powerful national defense, but he believes we need to reassess our national security priorities while sticking to a more disciplined budget. The situation in Poland may be a great opportunity to spur discussion in this arena.
