Update From Fancy Farm

The bang heard ‘round western Kentucky yesterday was the sound of Rand Paul slamming a copy of the 1,100 page bailout bill on the podium during his speech at the annual Fancy Farm Picnic.

“This is it! Eleven-hundred pages and no one read the bill! … If I am elected to the US Senate I will introduce legislation that says you cannot consider any legislation that you have not read.”

Rand was not shy in his assessment of the “hypocrisy” within both political parties: “The Republicans promised they would balance the budget and then they doubled the size of the debt when they were in charge. Democrats promised to help the working class and yet lo and behold when the bank bailout passed there were multi-million dollar bonuses put in and left in the bank bailout bill because of Senator Dodd [D-CT]. Multi-million dollar bonuses to executives of failed companies - ridiculous.”

Rand diagnosed the problem with Washington politics and succinctly offered the solution. “Why does Congress have a 20% approval rating? Because we keep doing the same thing. We elect the same old people year after year. I say you need new leadership in Kentucky. I say you need an outsider. You need someone who will go up and vote on the issues not because they are Republican not because they are Democrat because they’re good ideas or bad ideas.”

Standing out from the other politicians, Rand emphasized principle over party. “I pledge if I go to Washington to vote against any budget that’s not balanced – Republican or Democrat. That is an unusual pledge and you will not get that from any other candidate.”

Rand’s message clearly resonated with the audience and he even received some personal praise following his speech from individuals who were promoting other candidates. As always, Rand’s grassroots supporters from all over showed up early, stayed late and dominated the crowd during the event.

Senator Christopher Dodd is from Connecticut, not Massachusetts. Also, when I tried to register as a volunteer I entered my phone number in the field. When I clicked “Submit” it highlighted the phone number field and stated “Please enter a valid email address”. Something messed up with the new website’s HTML code?
