In today’s Washington Post, reporter Chris Cillizza made a demonstrably false statement about Kentucky’s U.S. Senate race. He states that Rand Paul has been a successful fundraiser “even though nearly the entire Republican Party establishment in the Bluegrass State has lined up behind Secretary of State Trey Grayson.”
This may have been closer to the truth a month ago, but the ground has shifted quite a bit since then and it is not true now. Most of the Kentucky GOP elected officials today will claim neutrality in the race, which is right where we want them now. The line behind Secretary Grayson is noticeably shorter than it was just a few weeks ago and those who remain in line look a little nervous.
The Washington Post missed the real story, which is the gathering momentum for Rand Paul’s effort to represent Kentuckians’ desire to rein in our out-of-control federal government. This is no time for tweaking the status quo with someone who might be a little bit better than the Democratic alternative. Senator Bunning’s retirement will leave us with one less stalwart against government bailouts and fiscal chicanery. We have trusted Washington D.C. insiders with the fate of our nation long enough. Rand Paul represents this major shift and denying that fact won’t make it go away.
