Across the nation, a rising tide of constitutional conservatives discontent with radical expansion of  government is manifesting itself in hundreds of tea party protests, causing difficulties not only for many Democrats, but also moderate Republicans and some of the Party’s hand-picked candidates. Some of the first tea parties took place in support of Ron Paul’s presidential candidacy in 2007, and have multiplied and intensified since the election of our current president.
A recent article in the National Journal sees Rand Paul’s race as emblematic of the clash between idealistic tea party patriots and establishment politicians. Out-raising all other senate candidates in the third quarter, Rand’s stunning ascension in the polls showed the power of the tea party movement. Will it be enough to win a U.S. Senate Seat? The results are likely to have a serious national impact.
The enthusiastic grassroots response to Rand’s message has been nothing short of inspiring. The establishment political machine was caught off guard, but retains its connection and organization. With trillions of dollars in bailouts and favors on the line, they can be expected to raise a great deal more money from PACs and special interests, and run a vicious attack campaign against Rand to maintain their power.
The tea party movement includes many first-time activists. Should they succeed, Dr. Paul’s election could serve as a rallying point for principled candidates, spark a wave of constitutional conservative electoral victories, and begin the process of restoring our liberty.
