After Senator Bunning vehemently voiced his opposition to Bernanke’s reappointment as Fed Chairman, Senator DeMint of South Carolina added to the storm of criticism leveled at the Federal Reserve last Thursday, asking tough questions about the Fed’s role in the financial crisis and its interference in the free market. He is also making a bold move to compel Senate leadership to bring S604 to Audit the Fed up for a vote.

“I will also object to floor consideration of Mr. Bernanke’s nomination until the Senate votes up-or-down on the Federal Reserve Sunshine Act. This bipartisan legislation, sponsored by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, has over thirty cosponsors and would allow the Government Accountability Office to conduct a full audit of the Federal Reserve. Americans deserve to know how their money is being managed so these mistakes never happen again.”

Senator DeMint is joined by Senators Vitter and Sanders in demanding a vote on the audit, which despite support from over 79% of Americans and 317 representatives, still has not been brought to a vote on the House or Senate floor.

Rep. Ron Paul originally introduced this legislation decades ago, but his presidential run and the accuracy of his warnings concerning the economy brought it into the spotlight, where it now enjoys broad support from across the political spectrum. The time is right for those supporting the measure to call their senators and urge them to demand a standalone vote on S604.

Dr. Rand Paul commends Senators DeMint, Vitter, Sanders and Bunning, and hopes that Kentucky’s senators will cosponsor S604 and join in efforts for Federal Reserve Transparency.
