Rand revitalizes Republicans

Rand Paul’s supporters proudly point to recent poll numbers showing big primary and general election wins in 2010. And they should be proud. Spreading Rand’s message of balanced budgets, term limits, and strong national defense has been a team effort and it has his opponents in both political parties leaning hard on the panic button.

The first order of business, though, is the Republican primary election on May 18. Rand’s main opponent in this race has shown an inability to articulate a clear conservative message. Kentucky voters trust people like Rand who give it to them straight. Getting ourselves into this current mess took a long time. Getting ourselves out will, too. But it will never happen until we elect a leader who will stand out front with the most serious advocates for smaller, less intrusive government. Fixing government in America means tearing up the political spoils system by the roots and getting bureaucrats out of the business of picking winners and losers in the economy.

Kentucky Republicans have added more new people to their rolls than Democrats have in the last sixteen months, but the largest growth by far has been among those registered voters who don’t affiliate with either party. Some Republicans may still want to pretend the party doesn’t have a credibility problem when it comes to selling the freedom message, despite Democrats’ best efforts to wreck themselves first. But Republicans clearly still have a lot of work to do. Meanwhile, Rand Paul’s words and actions are ringing louder every day. The Republican Party’s history contains fine examples of people standing up for individual rights. Rand Paul is committed to seeing that its future does as well.
