Rand Paul strongly denounced Monday a U.S. immigration agency’s effort to force a homeschooling family to go back to Germany with their five children, where homeschooling is illegal.

“Children belong to God and their parents, not the government,” Rand said. “It’s a matter of basic human rights that we stand up for these people and the Obama Administration should hear from us on this.”

Uwe and Hannelore Romeike fled Germany with their children in 2006, seeking political asylum in the United States. Their application for asylum was granted in federal court in Memphis last week. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has appealed that decision.
