With his support of the Obama/Reid/Pelosi agenda hanging around his neck like an albatross, Kentucky Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Jack Conway can’t be blamed for wanting to change the subject.

His efforts over the last few days, however, to embrace as political tools baseless issues about Dr. Rand Paul, his opponent, are both laughable and pathetic.

First, Conway raised a question about Paul’s certification as an eye surgeon by an ophthalmologist group. It turns out that Paul had taken a very principled stand in opposition to the group’s requirement that younger doctors be recertified periodically while exempting older doctors from this requirement.

This sounds like second- class citizenship. Conway, who tried unsuccessfully to paint Paul as a racist several weeks ago, apparently wouldn’t recognize discrimination if he tripped and fell over it.

Conway compounded this folly by criticizing Dr. Paul for advocating less government while accepting Medicare and Medicaid payments.

Where would Medicare and Medicaid patients be if all politically conservative doctors, and there are many, refused to treat them? This would work a terrible hardship on many of our older and poorer citizens. Paul, to his credit, chooses not to discriminate against these patients.

Conway’s efforts to change the subject suggest desperation by his campaign. What Kentuckians really want to learn from Conway is why he supports a cap and trade bill pending in Congress that would have a very negative impact on his potential constituents’ utility bills because of our state’s heavy reliance on coal-fired generating plants.

They would also like to know where was the Constitution when Congress mandated that every citizen be forced to buy health insurance regardless of their desire for it.

This is part of the Obama/Pelosi/Reid version of health care legislation that Conway supported.

Finally, Kentuckians wonder why Conway is reluctant to ask President Obama to campaign for him in Kentucky.

Never mind. We are reminded once again why Conway is desperate to change the subject.
