WASHINGTON, D.C. – This evening the U.S. Senate is posed to move toward passage of a continuing resolution to fund various federal agencies, increasing our national debt by tens of billions of dollars. In this time of economic crisis, the only way to handle increased need for funding is to find ways to offset the costs, not incur greater debt.

Last week Sen. Rand Paul proposed solutions throughout this year to fund increased emergency spending by subtracting funds from duplicative and wasteful federal spending, otherwise known as an offset.

“Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and the Democrats are threatening to shut down government because they insist that disaster funds be borrowed, not offset,” Sen. Paul said. “In other words, the Democrats are insisting we must increase our national debt by borrowing new funds or they will shut down the government.”

“Only in the bizarre world that is Washington, could anyone insist that we borrow more money rather than do the responsible thing and find budgetary offsets for new spending,” he continued.
