Below is the Richmond Register’s endorsement of Dr. Rand Paul for U.S. Senate in Kentucky.

RICHMOND — We are probably just as shocked as you are that we have chosen to endorse Rand Paul for U.S. Senate.

We admit, it has been a long, crazy campaign season. There have been a lot of distractions from the real issues. How often has Aqua Buddha trumped jobs creation, health care and the economy?

In a different time, Jack Conway would be an ideal candidate. He’s well-spoken, intelligent and has experience in the political realm.

But, this is a time when Americans are calling for drastic change. It seems that the roof is falling in on us, and if things continue, we’ll soon be trapped in the poor house.

Unemployment and underemployment continues to plague our communities. Middle class Americans are paying the price for the greediness of the rich and there is no end is sight.

It is time for a change.

Electing Rand Paul — even though some of his ideas are outrageous — will send a loud and clear message to our leaders that we are tired of living hand-to-mouth, and this time, we are serious about change. In 2010, we will back up our criticism with real action, instead of complaining all the way to the voting booth while selecting the same politicians to “represent” us.

Somewhere between Paul’s wacky ideas and what we have at the present, there is middle ground that we need to settle on. We’ll never get there if we keep electing politicians who want things to stay the way they are.

We can’t see Conway making a big difference for Kentucky in the U.S. Senate. Yes, he would fit in well with the current leaders. But, that’s not what we want or need now. We want someone who will make waves, not ride them out.

We encourage you to vote for Rand Paul.
