WASHINGTON, D.C. – Below is Senator Rand Paul’s Statement Regarding the 2011 March for Life:

January 22nd of this year marked the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, one of the most horrific judicial travesties in the history of our nation. Since abortion was legalized in 1973, there have been over 50 million abortions performed in the United States.

Today, concerned citizens from all over the country gather in Washington to protest this decision and to show their support for our fellow unborn citizens slaughtered daily by abortion. My staff and I welcome and commend our fellow supporters of life from Kentucky and from all over the country for this annual march in defense of life.

When I ran for Senate, I pledged to vote for any and all legislation that would end abortion or lead us in the direction of ending abortion. I intend to keep that promise. I support a Human Life Amendment to the United States Constitution, which will confirm in law that an unborn child is a person entitled to the right to life under our Constitution.

And this week, I will join Senator Roger Wicker and others in sponsoring the Life at Conception Act, which declares that all unborn persons are entitled to the equal protection of our laws from the moment of conception.

I strongly support legislation that would restrict federal courts from hearing cases involving abortion. In addition, state governments should be allowed to pass their own pro-life laws. If they were allowed to do so, many of our state governments would pass laws that would save countless unborn lives. In fact, prior to Roe, abortion was illegal in most states.

I oppose legislation that would mandate health insurance coverage of either surgical or chemical abortion. And of course, we must end the unconscionable federal funding of abortion and the steady stream of tax dollars that fund pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood.

As Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit has written, “surely centuries hence, people will look back on this gruesome practice done in the name of fundamental law by a society of high achievement. And they will shudder.” Judge Wilkinson’s opinion addressed specifically the practice known as partial-birth abortion, but his words pertain to abortion in all its forms. There is no place in our society for abortion, and it is our government’s duty to protect innocent human life.

I commend the organizers of this year’s March for Life for their hard work and preparation in anticipation of this event, as well as all the marchers who have come to Washington to stand in defense of life. Together we will work toward the day when the life of every human being, both born and unborn, is respected and protected under law.”
