WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Sen. Rand Paul introduced, and the Senate voted on, two amendments to Federal Aviation Administration/Highway Extension bill.
His first amendment, to cap the highway authorization level to the amount of revenue in the Highway Trust Fund, was not agreed to, with a final vote of 14-84. Sen. Paul’s second amendment, to return funding to the Federal Aviation Administration at 2008 authorization levels, was not agreed to, with a final vote of 36-61.
“Common-sense economics for our country in this time of economic crisis is to not spend more than you take in. The current spending levels in this bill will bankrupt the Highway Trust Fund. This amendment will prevent a need for a future bailout,” Sen. Paul said. “The current Administration’s reckless spending has contributed handily to our nation’s disastrous economy. By returning authorization levels to 2008, we can begin to reduce some of these significant increases while keeping many important programs, such as NextGen.”
