NY Times wrong on Rand Paul

Opinion and analysis are one thing, but the New York Times tries to bring its own facts into Kentucky’s U.S. Senate race in Sunday’s paper:

“Republicans still face many obstacles, not least a series of potentially divisive primaries in coming months that will highlight the deep ideological rifts within the party.”

“Across the country, Republican candidates are running as outsiders with the backing of conservative Tea Party activists, challenging Republicans identified with the party establishment. Several analysts said the victory of Scott Brown, a Republican who ran with Tea Party support, for the Massachusetts Senate seat, could encourage more challenges and could drive incumbents further to the right.”

“In Kentucky, Trey Grayson, the secretary of state, faces a stiff challenge from Rand Paul, a Tea Party candidate and the son of Representative Ron Paul of Texas, a Republican presidential candidate in 2008. If Mr. Paul wins – and early polling suggests that could happen – a Democrat would be favored to win the seat being contested, currently held by a Republican, Jim Bunning, who is not seeking re-election.”

What the fact-checkers at the Times missed was that the Rasmussen poll out only two weeks ago showed Rand beating both Democrats in the general election by wide margins. And on top of that, they missed the PPP poll out in late December that showed victories as well.

Establishment moderates appear prepared to stick together till the bitter end, but support for constitutional conservativism can’t be spun away. Rand Paul’s momentum hasn’t been slowed by desperate attacks by his establishment opponent and it won’t be slowed by this silliness from “the paper of record,” either.
