Rand Paul stops by Manchester
Election Day 2010 is in only five weeks, and both US Senate candidates are campaigning throughout the state.
Republican Rand Paul is touring eastern Kentucky right now, and spent time with supporters in Clay County Monday afternoon.
“If you want our side to win, get out there and tell your friends and family. Let’s win Clay County,” said Paul.
Rand Paul stopped by Pattie’s Place in Manchester around lunchtime to talk with supporters. Mildred Taylor has lived in Clay County all her life, and says she wants Paul to shake up Washington.
“I can’t tell you how excited. I think he’s that great of a man,” said Taylor.
“I hope by being here and showing that I do care about Clay County, and that they will work hard to try and help us with our campaign,” said Paul.
In his ads, and at Pattie’s Place, Paul told supporters he wants to lower taxes, enact term limits for elected officials, abolish cap and trade, and bring in jobs.
“Jobs, the economy, and the debt. The larger government grows, the more money it consumes, the less money we have left in Kentucky to create jobs,” said Paul.
The focus of opponent Jack Conway’s ads is on the ongoing drug issue in Kentucky, and a quote from Rand Paul.
The ad says, “Republican Rand Paul has told the Associated Press he does not believe illegal drug use is a pressing issue.”
Paul says that is inaccurate.
“I think they need to listen to that again. People are not as concerned about whether or not the adjudication and rehabilitation of drug users whether is done locally or federally,” said Paul.
“I think that Rand Paul would support the drug problem. From my talking to him, he tells me it was a misinterpretation,” said Charlie McWhorter, a Paul supporter.
Paul will visit Hazard, Hyden, and Harlan Tuesday.
Rand Paul says that not only does he support the coal industry, but he wants to protect all miners.
Paul told the Associated Press that he would even add more coal mine inspectors to ensure that.
In the latest WHAS/Courier-Journal Bluegrass poll, Paul’s opponent Jack Conway has closed the gap from 15 points to just two in three weeks. Paul holds a 49 to 47 advantage, with four percent undecided and a four percent margin of error.
