Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, is proposing over $1 billion in national missile defense cuts while diverting the small savings to the ongoing wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other potential “irregular campaigns”. However, while Rand supports an overall reduction in federal spending in order to balance the budget and pay down $11 trillion of debt, he believes national defense should play a major role as stipulated in the Constitution. In the weeks ahead, Rand will be developing a new approach to foreign policy, one that defends American soil, operates within a balanced budget, and upholds the rule of law.
