When Juan, 14, and Andreas Hernandez, 8, came from Guatemala, they were legally and functionally blind from juvenile cataracts.
They didn’t ask Dr. Rand Paul whether he was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology or the National Board of Ophthalmology. Paul removed their cataracts and placed an intraocular lens and did post-operative laser work. Paul did this at no charge through the Children of the Americas program. Paul founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Bank, which performs surgery and eye exams on those patients unable to qualify for government care or private insurance.
Paul sees hundreds of patients each year for little or no pay through the Lions clinic. Now, for political reasons, The Courier-Journal wants to criticize Paul for arguing that all doctors should recertify, not just the younger ones. Am I the only one who thinks The Courier-Journal is not treating Paul fairly?
