Competing on quality

Rand Paul’s quick trip to the top of the polls in Kentucky’s U.S. Senate race is directly attributable to the quality of his message. Freedom, capitalism, and small government have found an eloquent champion in the doctor from Bowling Green.

The campaign couldn’t help drawing an analogy between Rand’s success and recent news of the Mayo Clinic trying to stop accepting government payments for treating Medicare patients. Beginning with one office in Arizona, Mayo will only take cash payments from Medicare beneficiaries.

It doesn’t have to be like this. Rand supports allowing individuals to opt out of Medicare. Getting the government’s Medicare mandate out of the way would allow innovative free market solutions to help these patients buy the high quality services Mayo offers without also having to pay for the required government plan.

Proponents of socialized medicine in Washington D.C. would attack this problem by forcing providers to accept Medicare. Rand understands that more government is not the answer to a problem caused by out-of-control government.

Rand Paul supports willing providers and willing consumers negotiating trade based on quality and price rather than allowing government bureaucrats to continue exercising arbitrary control.
